Complex Structured Light patterns for 3D Depth Sensing
Depth sensing is growing in importance within the world of industrial machine vision. Depth information helps solve and simplify challenging inspection tasks such as bin picking, gesture recognition, body scanning, volumetric measurement, palletizing and robot guidance. The illumination wavelength, optical power and more importantly, the specific laser pattern projected plays a critical role in the process of efficiently extracting depth information to solve the manufacturing task.
Active Stereo Triangulation is an application where the depth information is
determined by an imaging setup made of two or more cameras. The depth data is extrapolated via triangulation by autocorrelating identical image points on each camera. For applications with no high contrast features, a structured illumination pattern projected by Osela’s Random Pattern Projector adds the needed texture and referencing to your image for more precise image correlation increasing depth sensing resolution. Osela’s multiple line projector is also typically used as a solution.
Structured light is another solution for Depth Sensing. By illuminating the target with a specific light pattern, depth information can be extracted by a single image of the camera using triangulation. The light deformation in patterns such as multiple lines, dot matrix or random dot pattern is used to characterize dimensional information of the target.
Time of flight is another technique used to acquire depth information. This technology requires high speed illumination to determine distances of objects from the sensor, by measuring the time difference of projected and reflected light over the field of view. Our unique laser technology aids to create uniform fields of two dimensional light, specifically for this application.
